Interview with Varsity Volleyball Coach: Nicole Jensen

By: Trisha M and Josie L

  1. How do you think the season is going so far?
              We are currently 7-8.

  1. What do you think the girls need to improve on as a team?
We are constantly working on our defense and passing.

  1. How many years have you been coaching volleyball?
This is my sixth year coaching and second year here at Sleepy Eye Public Schools.

  1. What was your favorite game this season that the team worked well together in?
We definitely played one of our best games against Redwood Valley, but my favorite game was beating St. Mary’s during homecoming week.

  1. What are your expectations?
I expect the team to work, play hard, and always to be improving.

  1. What are you most proud of in your coaching career?
I guess that I am most proud of the fact that each team I have coached has improved their record from the previous year.

  1. What three words do you think students would describe you as a teacher/coach?
I would probably say hardworking, relatable, and fun.

  1. What sports did you play when you were in High School?
I played volleyball and basketball. I was also involved in band, choir, NHS, FFA, FCCLA, and student council.

  1. What do you think your strengths are as a coach?
I have high expectations and that often motivates the players to have the same expectation. I have played the game for over fifteen years and in multiple positions so I’m able to help and relate to players in all positions on the team.

  1. What made you become interested in coaching volleyball?

I began coaching at a young age. From seventh grade and beyond I would attend camps with my high school coach to assist with the camps. I have coached many Junior Olympic teams and always helped at practices during the spring. I love the game of volleyball and hope to show others how much fun volleyball is to play.
