Literacy Month At Sleepy Eye Public School By: Kaylee H. and Janie M.
March marks National Literacy Month! This month, students at Sleepy Eye Public Elementary practiced their reading skills and even had a literacy night where they can play games, read books, and dress up as their favorite characters. Throughout the whole month, students in the elementary made video clips of their favorite books so when people came into the library, they could just pick up the ipad and watch a video of the book they were planning on reading later.
As Janie and I were helping in the elementary, we encountered many different projects they were working on. One of them was literacy testing where the children had to read to the adults and we counted how many words they got wrong and how many words they read in a certain amount of time. To make it a little more enjoyable, the students spent a considerable amount of time making decorations for the hallways and the library. Students also had the opportunity to invite their parents (siblings, grandparents, etc) to come and read for their class.
