Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean By: Tianna F

Mariana Trench is known to be the deepest part of the world’s vast oceans at an astounding seven miles deep. That is like putting Mt. Everest at the bottom and having a mile of water covering it. The intense darkness of the trench has given birth to many eerie creatures, two of them being the Goblin Shark and the Barreleye.

The Goblin Shark- This treacherous creature can grow to be between 8 and 13 feet long and can weigh up to 463 pounds. They have a unique snout and a staggering tooth structure and because of the shape and look of its rubbery snout and fang-like teeth, they have been given multiple nicknames including “elfin shark,” “tiburon duende” (Spanish for “hobgoblin shark”), and “requin lutin” (French for “imp shark”).
Barreleye- Found at depths of 2,000 feet, is most notable for its transparent head and highly sensitive eyes. The green lenses above each eye allow the fish to filter out what little sunlight makes it down to these depths and focus on the lights of its prey.
