High School Never Ends By: Erin Kotten

The clock is ticking down. Down to the end of another year. The end of my last year here at Sleepy Eye Public School. It’s almost hard to believe that my high school years are coming to an end. The finish line is in sight and in a few days, I will be walking down that stage and receiving my high school diploma.
This school has always been my place; it’s hard to imagine not coming here any more. I grew up here. My first day of preschool only seems like a few years ago. It’s funny the way time works. You wait your entire life wishing for school to be over. You just want to be done and be an independent individual going off to college and starting your own life. (And maybe you don’t wish to go to college, that’s okay too.) Though, it also means leaving the friends you grew up with and come to love, your teachers, family, and anyone you have come to care about. It’s not like you’re leaving forever, yet it’ll be different either way.
It’ll be a time for new friends. At college, you are likely to discover yourself more. You’re no longer in the boundaries of the high school curriculum; you are free to choose the path you wish to take. There are still the general classes like Mathematics and English, but also you get to take a more broader range of classes. Classes you are actually interested in. Which is pretty exciting if you ask me.
Advice I have for younger students is to take the days each day at a time. Enjoy and live each of them, minute by minute. Laugh with your friends. Indulge yourself in something you’re interested about. Surprise your parents by actually doing a chore without them asking you to. Study for that test. Retake that test. Take a break. Eat a milkshake. Buy a new pair of socks. Get a job and spend your first paycheck on that thing you’ve been wanting. Give your favorite teacher an apple, or their favorite pop. Volunteer your time helping others. Allow time to yourself. Don’t worry about what’s popular now, just enjoy what you like. Who cares if another person doesn’t like it. You do you and only you. Believe me, you’ll love yourself that much more.
