Sneaky or Caring Parents?

By Patty G

In my Government class today, we read an article that debated whether parents should or should not be able to eavesdrop on their son/daughter phone calls. There are many different opinions and also different point of views. A mother would be curious and would want to overhear their daughter or sons conversations just to make sure that they aren’t doing things they are not supposed to do. But on the other end, children and teens also have rights and one of them involves the right to their own privacy. There are two point of views. In the point of view of a mom, I think it'd be okay to once in awhile make sure their son/daughter is behaving well, but in a child/teens point of view, it is not okay to have your parents overhear your conversations even if “You have nothing to hide.” Reports have shown as consequence of this incident Parents are not able to monitor their children’s calls in a decision hailed by American Civil Liberties Union & The Washington state Supreme Court.
