Vikings Lose 34 - 14 to 49ers in 3rd Preseason Game

By Jacob R & Caleb C
Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to victory over the Vikings Sunday night in Minnesota. He started slow, completing only 1 out of 7 passes early, but then on his 3rd series of the game, he completed 6 straight passes including a touchdown to Quinton Patton. Late in the second quarter Lavelle Hawkins returned a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown. That allowed the 49ers to get out to a 20 - 7 lead at halftime. In the second half, the vikings tried to make a comeback but the 49er defense held them to only 7 more points and the 49ers were able to win easily 34-14. Colin Kaepernick went 7/13 with 72 yards and 1 touchdown. His favorite receiver was Quinton Patton, who had 4 catches for 35 yards. Frank Gore had 2 rushing attempts for 2 yards. Despite 11 penalties that resulted in 118 yards, the 49ers looked sharp for the 3rd week of the preseason.

Starting quarterback for the Vikings, Christian Ponder went 17 for 23 attempted passes for 116 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. His first touchdown was to Zach Line in the 2nd quarter and his second was to Joe Webb later in the third. The backup, Matt Cassel, went 3 for 10 for 20 yards. MVP Adrian Peterson played 2 snaps but did not touch the ball. Toby Gerhart was the leading rusher with 20 yards on 7 carries. Stephen Burton was the leading receiver; he had 3 receptions for 31 yards. Greg Jennings, the receiver the Vikings picked up from Green Bay, had 24 yards on 2 receptions. The Vikings had 6 penalties for a total of 75 yards and 2 turnovers in the game. This was the Vikings 3rd loss in the preseason. Hopefully, they will be able to turn things around in the regular season.
