Futuristic and steampunk mix together with miming and music to make a breathtaking musical experience. The members of Steam Powered Giraffe met while taking theatre arts at Grossmont College in San Diego. They are all very experienced in pantomime, a dramatic entertainment in which performers express meaning through gestures accompanied by music. The act combines robot pantomime with sketches, pop culture references, improvised comedy, and of course, original music, including a capella. Steam Powered Giraffe has two great albums, alive album, and a third being released on December 3rd. They have covered a few famous songs including “Diamonds” by Rihanna.
The three ‘robots’ include twins David Bennett and Christopher ‘Bunny’ Bennett, along with Sam Luke. The characters that these guys portray have a long backstory. The other band members are Michael Reed, known as the one man band, Steve Negrete, who does audio engineering, and Matt Smith, the percussionist. Their venues consist of conventions and expos. Their comedy, miming, and music make for one heck of a show. I recommend them to any folk or rock lover. Their music is catchy and I find myself humming to some of their tunes in class.
