Mafia Night Jabber

By Karrah R

It is the dead of night. The only sound you hear is the sound of a dripping pipe in the mysterious dark alley you walked into after your job at the restaurant. You walk through the alley, frightened by how quiet it is. You begin to hear murmurs to your left, you walk towards them and listen closely, for your curiosity always gets the best of you. It is two gentlemen speaking of some sort of drop they need to make. They seem to be talking about someone named Jabber, and how they are going to “get him a little gift.” The first thing you think that they are going to murder Jabber. You begin to walk away but stumble over a small pebble. They heard you! You run as fast as you can to get away from the two large gentlemen, but they are gaining on you. You get out of the alley and continue to run, wondering why there are no people walking around town. Then you run next to a black dodge charger and the door slams open! You fall to the ground, dazed and confused. The two men stand over you laughing, then they grab you and lift carry you into the charger. Still being confused, you don’t fight, you lie there like a ragdoll. You begin to feel sleepy and doze off.
“Hello. How unexpected for you to drop in.” A man in a nice suit claims. You see that you are sitting in a chair in front of a nice, cherry wood desk. The room is a little cramped and crowded. There are books on each side of the room, and a few pictures that you can’t make out.
“Wh-Who are you?” you ask. The tension in the room is constricting and making you nervous, and rather sweaty.
“We are the mafia. Being that you heard my men, you now have to carry out the mission. I suppose you heard about it, since you can’t keep your nose out of our business.” The man explains, stroking what seems to be a maine coon cat. The man’s voice is scratchy and irritating.
“What mission?” You ask, forgetting about what you heard in the alley. “I was only walking by them when I was going home from work.” You try to get out of the sticky situation.
“You have to give our friend, Jabber, a little present.” The man said, completely ignoring your plea to get out of the mission. You begin to get annoyed with how this man won’t listen to you. “He works at a depressing little restaurant down by the area where you were walking. He likes to stay low profile, but I am sure you can do it. You don’t look threatening at all, so he won’t expect you.” The man explains. “Oh, one more thing. If you don’t do the mission, my men will dispose of you.” The man then gestures you to get up and leave his presence. You then get up and make your way to the restaurant. You don’t know how to get to the restaurant from here. You look around, then you decide to whistle for a cab. A cab pulls up almost immediately and you direct it where to go. Turns out the restaurant was only a couple of blocks away.
You walk into the restaurant and look around at all of the people. You just realize that it is the same restaurant you work at. Then you go and grab a microphone and say, “Is there a Jabber in here?” All of the people stare at you confused on your announcement. No one comes forward, you begin to get nervous. You get out your wallet to buy yourself a something to drink, then you realize something. Your middle name… It’s Jabber. They couldn’t be talking about you. You get confused and hysterical. What did you do? There is no way that they were talking about you. Then you see two gentlemen walking towards you, they seem to be the same ones that chased you through the alley. You stiffen and tighten your grip on your wallet. The two men come up to you and say, “Happy birthday!” They then hand you a gift and smile. You open the present and it is the watch you always wanted. “You see, we were planning on giving you a little gift for your birthday.” The men explained, then you laughed and sighed with relief. So by “a little present” they meant an actual present. You then laughed and learned your lesson, don’t assume something that may not be true.
