The Big Tom

By Alex B

On Friday April 18th, we had the day off for school.  I looked at the weather forecast, and it was going to be nice. I decided that it was a good morning to get my first turkey at this new spot I got permission for and have scouted many times before I went. Previously this year,  I bought a new avian-x hen turkey decoy. Sunset on Friday morning was suppose to be 6:30, and I wanted to get to the woods early before the turkeys started gobbling.  I set my alarm clock for 4:45 am, got up, got dressed and headed to the woods with my friend Lucas. When we got to the field at 5:30 we walked to the tree that we both were going to sit under and I went and put my new decoy out. As we were sitting there, I heard a gobble and I knew he was still going to be in the tree because it was still dark out. I looked in the tree and seen a big blob and I knew it was the turkey right away. I didn’t call any because I didn’t want him to get excited that there was a hen on the ground already in the morning and fly down to the decoy before I could shoot. About 6:15 I called and he gobbled right back at me. I knew he was going to come my way when he flew down. 6:30 rolled around and he flew down and about 5 minutes later he popped into the field. Well since the tom and I were talking so much early in the morning a hen came in to see what was up. I thought at that time that my hunt was over and that the tom was going to go with the hen. Well about 15 minutes later, another tom came and took the hen away from the first tom and I called and he came right over to my decoy, 10 yards away and I shot him.
