Why Students Should Play Sports In High School? By: Lauren K

Why should students play sports? There are benefits in all different areas from playing sports. Some people can gain physical, mental, emotional, social, and academic advantages. Some physical benefits students gain from playing sports are reducing the risk of obesity, and staying fit and healthy. Sports can improve coordination and balance and it can also improve sleep habits. Mental/emotional gain a person can earn when playing sports are making it easier to physically relax and lessens stress, and gains confidence and self-esteem, and learning cooperation and leadership. Students can achieve social skills like stronger peer relationships, making friendships, and they may have a greater family attachment.
There are many benefits for students academically. Studies show that students that play sports in high school are more likely to have higher grades and expectations for themselves, and have greater connections with school. An article titled “Psychological and Social Benefits of Playing True Sport” on a website called truesport.org says “A 2007 study found that women who played sports in high school were 73% more likely to earn a college degree within six years of graduating high school than those who did not play sports.” The academic improvements of high school students are higher when they participate in sports.
