(Part One of Three)

I think arts aren’t very important, but they are still needed.

I think the arts are a very important part of our school life. If we didn’t have the arts I feel we would be shy people and wouldn't know how to express ourselves correctly. I think we need the arts for our everyday life.
-Ashtyn
Arts are the most important thing someone could learn in school. Even though 25% of public schools are cutting the art programs in school because of their budget. Without the arts, kids will be more shy and not know how to express themselves correctly. Most schools in America should have a art program that kids can enroll in if they want to. Most kids choose not to enroll because they think it’s lame or boring.
We asked three arts teachers Mr. Elker, Ms. Iwan, and Mrs. Brinkman a few questions about the arts. Here is Mrs. Brinkman’s answers:
Why and how did you get into arts?
“I have been involved in the arts or some form of the arts since I was in elementary school. I have always been drawn to theatrical and musical arts. My parents and teachers always encouraged me to participate in the arts as much as they encouraged me to play sports, which I also did. It is a great way to express oneself and be creative and become a well rounded person.”
Why are arts important in schools?
“Arts are IMPERATIVE in schools. Fine arts do so much more than “just offer an art credit.” The fine arts provide learners with non-academic benefits such as promoting self-esteem, motivation, cultural exposure, creativity, emotional expression, as well as team building/teamwork and appreciation of diversity.”
Why do you think students need arts in school to be a better student?
“There is evidence that demonstrates students that participate in the arts are more apt to become better learners in school. Some of that evidence is reducing student dropout, raising student attendance, developing better team players, fostering a love for learning, enhancing student creativity, and producing a more prepared citizen for the workplace for tomorrow.”
What’s the best thing about teaching arts?
“I love seeing the creativity and individual growth from each student. Even the most shy, quiet student can really excel in some form of the arts; whether it be visual arts or performing arts. There is a spark that ignites when students see themselves create something that has value. I love everything about teaching theatre arts! There is a great energy and vibe in the room and everyone is there to support each other and encourage creativity!”
